Donaire Becomes Two Division Champion

MANILA, Philippines – Nonito Donaire Jr. weathered the pressuring style of Rafael Concepcion to score a unanimous decision victory over the Panamanian and annex the WBA interim super flyweight crown at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino today (Aug. 16).
The three judges scored the bout 117-111, 115-113 and 116-112 for Donaire, who made maximum use of the ring and utilized superior boxing skills to keep his charging foe at bay.
Concepcion, who suffered a cut in the eyebrow early in the fight, tried relentlessly to pressure Donaire the entire fight. The determined Panamanian manage to land some blows to Donaire's head, but the Filipino employed effective footwork to evade his foe's attacks.
With the win, Donaire (22-1, 14 KOs) becomes a two-division champion, having entered the fight as the IBF flyweight champion. The tough Concepcion, who came in overweight, slid to 13-4, 8 KOs.
The Donaire-Concepcion fight is the main event of the Top Rank Inc.-promoted "Pinoy Power 2" boxing card.
Earlier, Filipino Bernabe Concecpion was disqualified in his title attempt against WBO featherweight champion Steven Luevano. Referee Jay Nady stopped the fight at the end of round seven when Concepcion hit Luevano after the bell. - By Dino Maragay (Philstar News Service, www.philstar.com)
